***Update June 2018- I no longer use or endorse MailChimp. The crazy “anti-affilaite marketing spam filter and an ever changing and strangely political service took to much time to baby sit, and I have more important things to do !

Mail Chimp offers e-mail list building for everyone, With super easy forms and templates and a free account for up to 2000 subscribers and very affordable rates after that, it’s E mail list building in its simplest form!

***Update June 2018- I no longer use or endorse MailChimp . Explanation is in the Cons section of the review below.

I have now been with Aweber for some time and completely love it! ***

Let’s take a look inside Mail Chimp!

To mail Chimp, Product Overview

MailChimp and Rocket Science Group began in 2001. MailChimp began as a paid E Mail Marketing service and a “freemium version” was added to their service platform in 2009. MailChimp quickly grew from 85,000 users to over 450,000 within a year. By 2014 MailChimp reported that it was sending over 10 Billion E mails per month on behalf of its users.

MailChimp is a widely used service in E Mail marketing for capturing opt in subscribers and sending e-mail to those subscribers, as well as the easy to use Landing page service that is offered within MailChimp.

The free plan has helped any aspiring e-mail marketers in sending up to 12,000 E Mails per month to as many as 2,000 subscribers and is still considered one of the most user-friendly options for beginners with a cost that can’t be beaten since it is completely free for up to 2,000 subscribers. Once you move beyond that 2,000 subscriber threshold the price bumps $30 for the next 500 subscribers

Comparison- Get Response, and Constant Contact – To mail Chimp definitely has more value for the E-mail marketer that is just starting out! To mail Chimp’s free membership is good up to 2000 subscribers. Get Response is only 1000. From there the premium plans are comparable, but To mail Chimp is still the better value in terms of cost and ease of use.

Comparison to Convert Kit-  While the Mail Chimpnservice is great for lists up to 2000, the tools and segmenting gets a little cluttered after that.

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

PRO The cost is free for up to 2000 subscribers

PRO Ease of use. You can create an opt In form and have it live, on your site within 2 minutes and start your list with the To mail Chimp opt-in plug in that is free within WordPress.

PRO Very Beginner oriented with room to grow

The Bad:

***June 2018 Update- After some time using Mail Chimp, I have become irritated with their service! The Spam filter caused an issue with my account that stopped collecting Emails half way through a Solo Ad campaign. That was the last of Many instances of constant upkeep and issues with the service. I am no longer with MailChimp and now with Aweber! Aweber has a very affordable option for lists of up to 1500 subscribers that is perfect for beginners, and plans after that, that are very economical ! ***

Con: SPAM Filter , After much thought the only real con I can come up with is MailChimp emails could easily be labeled as spam due to the ability to add anyone into their email list. There is a manual feature for adding E-mail subscribers. There are others that do the same, with only a few exceptions. Like I said I couldn’t really find a problem with anything else, and I have set it up on 2 web sites!

Con: If a marketer is after an E mail auto-responder service that he/she can promote. The main Affiliate bonuses offered with Mail Chimp are a points system and not as much a monetized promotion.

Who is To mail Chimp For?

Mail Chimp is a product / Service that is really for anyone, but is a really good option for the beginner in E mail marketing because there is no risk involved in a free service and can help someone who is apprehensive to get started and grow within MailChimp.

The tools for getting started are as simple as you can get! I actually created a clean, simple pop-up with my logo for adding e-mail subscribers in less than 1 minute and it was live on my first page. Then simply paste it to every page you want. My Final Opinion of To mail Chimp

***Update June 2018- I no longer use or endorse MailChimp. The constant issues with their Spam filter and playing within their strangely political format was the last straw! I am now with Aweber and Completely love it! It is veryo ec

Mial Chimp makes what seems difficult as easy as it gets ! There are some other E mail services with more bells and whistles, but in my opinion they are bells and whistles that aren’t worth the effort of learning and the expense of the service. I am happy with it to this point! I am in the fairly early stages of using the service with only 177 subscribers. But I couldn’t think of a single thing so far that I can be negative about except the goofy name !

There may be a time when A bigger and more powerful platform will come in to play as the better option, but I can’t see how yet. As of right now, Mail Chimp is a pleasant surprise to this point!

I will be keeping Mail Chimp a little while longer. But as I get closer to 2000 subscribers I will be exporting to Aweber. For my needs and scaling options and the ease of handling a larger, segmented list, I think Aweber has a much more professional looking approach and even more easy to use templates for landing pages ,lead magnets etc, but like MailChimp is very easy to use.

Rules for affiliates

Promotions of Affiliate Offers must be done through your website in order to used To mail Chimp. A product review with affiliate links must go through your website. I’m all for canned spam laws. But it seems like almost everything that is done as an affiliate marketer is considered spam within Mail Chimp. If I have an issue it will likely be due to this issue.

From the Mail Chimp website:

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketers are typically rewarded by a third party for recruiting customers. The reason we don’t permit this activity is that there’s no real obligation to care about subscriber satisfaction or to maintain a healthy e-commerce relationship with them. MailChimp isn’t meant for this type of marketing.

Affiliate links
Affiliate links encourage subscribers to click through to a third-party product or service, and are used by a wide variety of marketers and e-commerce businesses, often in the context of a partnership. For example, if you’re a blogger, you might link to or promote the website of one of your sponsors. These types of links are fine to use in MailChimp, as long as the URLs you link to haven’t been blacklisted.(MOST HAVE)

Updated VERDICT: MailChimps crazy Spam filter and anti-affiliate marketer stance combined with the terrible looking integrations and strangely political service dictated I leave. I no longer endorse Mail Chimp!

  1. Hi Mike ~ I enjoyed your review of this email product and wanted to make sure I complimented you on it.
I have been using MailChimp for several months now and also find it very user friendly – actually fun to use.
I think it is great for those who wish to get started with a really good email auto-responder service because you can use it at no cost up to 2,000 addresses.
As one begins to build an online presence and a more substantial business I find that MailChimp, although an excellent system, only offers Chimp Rewards or credits for referring others.
If a blogger, as an example wishes to earn affiliate commission, MailChimp may not be the right service for them.
I plan to use MailChimp along with AWeber as my business grows.
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated… thanks again for such an excellent review!

    1. Excellent points Dallas, and thank you for your comment!
I completely agree with your assesment. Mail Chimp is a great tool to add to the tool box of those starting out.
As you start building out content on your site as a newbie the to do list conflicts with the amount of time
many beginners have. And since I am 100% about starting a subscriber list ASAP , MialChinp offers an easy format to get that done.
Many people stay with mail Chimp as their list grows, That’s cool too! But I believe that when I surpass 2000 subscribers I will be converting over to Convert Kit.
A freind of mine writes software for the military and does day trading. He has a day trading niche website that he is growing a segment of his list for.
I don’t get to see him much anymore because he lives 4 hours away, but on my last visit to his home in Charleston SC he introduced me to Convert Kit.
I had been seeing Pat Flynn’s promotions of Convert Kit on Smart Passive Income and didn’t think too much about it. But when I saw it and the quality of landing pages, lead magnets and such I was hooked! And it’s just as simple as Mail Chimp.
Sorry for the run on reply!

  2. This is a very helpful post. I was having some trouble setting up Mail Chimp so I am very grateful for your very clear explanation. I will be starrting work on mine tomorrow.
    thank you.

  3. Hey Mike,

Thanks for the very elaborate review on MailChimp. I have used Aweber, Getresponse, and MailChimp in the past and I must say thanks to your review I now to stick with MailChimp.

    Keep it up!
    Kevin Van

    1. Thanks a lot for your kind words Kevin !
I really believe that Mail Chimp is the easiest autoresponder tool for people in the beginning stages of building and using e mail lists.
I hope to be over the 2000 subscription point at some point this year, and I will then go to one of the paid options at Mail Chimp.
The paid version brings more features alive and after having it long enough to make a decision, I will either keep it or move on to Convert Kit. I really love Convert kit!
I will then do an updated review on Mailchimp with my findings !
Thanks a lot for your comment Kevin !
